The Times Tables Rhymes are written in rhyming couplets with rhythmic structure, which help to reinforce the commutative nature of multiplication (meaning the order you multiply the numbers does not change the product; for example, 7 x 8 = 56 and 8 x 7 = 56).
The illustrations often have numbers in them, creating memory hooks. For example, on the pirate ship, number 32 is etched, and in the Rhyme with the ape and seven fluffy chicks, the chicks sit to create the number 7.
